Collective exhibition for anonymous artists

Frankfurt am Main

2023

This project, part of the BIP "Common Ground" initiative in Frankfurt supported by the EU, involved a collaboration with Belgian artist and social worker Eline. We focused on an abandoned building, the former campus of Goethe University near the city center. The state had cemented the entrances to prevent access, but despite this, various groups—from graffiti artists to homeless individuals—found alternative uses for the building. Frankfurt faces severe real estate speculation and a lack of housing for students and low-income individuals, with some neighborhoods suffering from gentrification.

Fascinated by how these individuals challenged state restrictions, we decided not to make an artistic intervention ourselves, as neither of us were from Frankfurt. Instead, we positioned ourselves as curators, "framing" and "formalizing" the interventions on the building with colored tape, under the watchful eyes of passersby. We organized an exhibition for anonymous artists and created a poster, a catalog with professional photos, and a documentation video where we discussed our curatorial intentions and acknowledged the artists' intellectual property.
